BING CROSBY / AL JOLSON (SEPIA 1053) BING CROSBY GOOD & RARE VOL. 2 (SEPIA 1091)

Title: Good & Rare
Artist: Bing Crosby
Catalogue No: SEPIA 1071
Barcode: 5055122110712
Release Date: 4 July 2006

Bing Crosby is often remembered at Christmas time each year because of his recording of White Christmas but he was much more versatile than that as this CD will demonstrate. Crosby dominated popular music for two decades with over 300 chart successes in America including no less than 38 No. 1 hits, and as an actor, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1944 and was nominated twice more for that prize.

By the late 1940s and early 1950s, Bing’s hits were becoming less frequent. He was still recording quality songs from shows and films which were relevant to the story of the vehicle but which perhaps lacked hit parade potential. The tracks on this CD include some of that material and every one of the 27 tracks here, for one reason or another, has never been issued in a digital form before.

We have songs from several of Bing’s films - Riding High, Mr. Music, Just For You, Little Boy Lost, The Country Girl. Bing had always sought to cover the better songs from Broadway musicals and here we have his versions of So In Love from Kiss Me, Kate, The Yodel Blues from Texas, Li’l Darlin’, The Best Thing For You from Call Me Madam and Ohio from Wonderful Town.

Bing visited France several times in the early 1950s and he was encouraged to record a compilation of French songs which became his first concept album - Le Bing. This 10” record has never been re-released and to reflect his Gallic influences of this time, we have four songs - Cela M’est Egal (from Little Boy Lost), Mon Couer Est Un Violon (from the Le Bing album), the classic La Vie En Rose (also from Le Bing) and Embrasse-Moi Bien.
