At
first
it
may
seem
strange
to
see
screen
legends
Ann
Sothern
and
Dorothy
Lamour
sharing
a
musical
CD,
but
in
reality
they
were
two
of
the
most
popular
singing
actress
/
comediennes
in
the
history
of
movies
and
each
had
the
distinction
of
enjoying
careers
that
spanned
six
decades
from
the
30's
to
the
80's,
with
both
making
their
final
screen
appearances
in
1987.
Though
their
paths
never
crossed
in
a
major
way,
they
are
both
listed
as
chorus
girls
in
the
1933
Busby
Berkeley
classic
"Footlight
Parade"
and
both
released
successful
LPs
in
1957,
from
which
this
new
Sepia
collection
is
derived.
In
between
the
popular
"Maisie"
films,
Ann
Sothern
continued
to
star
in
other
films
as
well,
among
them
"Lady
Be
Good"
in
which
she
introduced
"You'll
Never
Know"
(the
rare
Roger
Edens
version,
not
Harry
Warren)
and
the
Kern-Hammerstein
classic
"The
Last
Time
I
Saw
Paris"
which
won
that
year's
Oscar
for
Best
Song.
The
following
year
saw
her
recreating
Ethel
Merman's
role
in
Cole
Porter's
"Panama
Hattie,"
in
which
her
songs
included
the
hit
"Let's
Be
Buddies".
Dorothy
Lamour
is
best-remembered
for
the
"Road
to"
films
with
Bing
Crosby
and
Bob
Hope.
She
had
no
formal
training
as
a
singer,
but
auditioned
for
a
vocalist
spot
with
bandleader
Herbie
Kay
and
got
the
job.
Following
radio
appearances
with
Rudy
Vallee,
she
signed
a
movie
contract
and
was
starred
in
her
first
film,
"The
Jungle
Princess"
in
which
she
wore
her
trademark
costume,
a
sarong,
and
introduced
the
song
"Moonlight
and
Shadows".
She
appeared
in
a
succession
of
dramas,
comedies,
musicals
and
of
course
south
sea
island
adventures
in
her
sarong
and
became
one
of
the
few
movie
stars
to
be
equally
popular
on
records.
In
1957,
as
her
films
were
bringing
her
new
popularity
on
television,
she
issued
an
LP
containing
10
of
her
favourite
tracks.
We
are
delighted
to
release
this
collection
of
songs
by
Ann
Sothern
and
Dorothy
Lamour,
two
former
glamour
girls
who
through
sheer
talent
and
hard
work
held
on
to
their
stardom
for
most
of
the
past
century.
Their
movies,
as
well
as
these
recordings,
will
continue
to
win
them
new
fans
for
years
to
come.
