Alma Cogan, the singer known as "The Girl with The Laugh In Her Voice" was one of the brightest stars to emerge from post-war Britain in the 1950s.
Already an EMI recording artist, Alma's career was given a boost in 1953 by her weekly appearance on BBC radio's "Take It From Here". On the comedy series Alma sang a variety of songs and performed in comedy sketches that showcased her versatility and endeared her to the British public. Chart success followed and before long Alma was hosting her own TV series where she would appear wearing her self-designed voluminous and headline grabbing dresses that became her trademark.
Alma was extremely hard working, toured extensively and was often ahead of the game. She wore the latest fashion, performed songs popular elsewhere before they caught on here and recorded in various languages for the international market. Incredibly she was one of the first British stars to have a million seller in Japan and was also popular in Germany, Sweden, Israel and Australia.
Having achieved the status of a world renowned entertainer, Alma was soon writing songs with Stan Foster, her Musical Director, and would have gone on to bigger things had she not died far too young in 1966 at the age of 34.
We remember this very special lady on this 2 CD set with 57 songs she performed on "Take It From Here" including "Isn't Life Wonderful", the song she sang on her very first appearance on the radio
programme. The 14 bonus tracks include demos Alma made of songs written by herself and Foster. Also included is the song "Southbound Train", a demo Alma made very early on in 1951 and previously un-issued. This release has been possible through the help of many of Alma's friends. Not only have they provided rare recordings and photographs for the CD they have also shared their memories of Alma with us.
