In August 1959, RCA Victor released a Glenn Miller album - the landmark set "For the Very First Time: 50 Never Before Released Performances by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra". The Miller keepsake was cloth-bound and, besides the beautiful cover artwork, contained three 12" monaural LPs, three full-color illustrations, nine pages of text, a two-page "story behind the records," and a depiction of a letter from Miller's widow, Helen:
"I am amazed and delighted that at this late date [Miller Estate attorney] Mr. [David] Mackay has been able to locate and supply recordings of so many of Glenn's tunes to be released for the very first time on phonograph records," she wrote. "I have every confidence that the album will become a real collector's item."
All of the music on "For the Very First Time" was originally broadcast over CBS radio in 1940-42 during Miller's "Chesterfield Show." Most of the source programs originated in New York City, but a few were aired from Washington, DC or Chicago or Hollywood.
"For the Very First Time" contained previously-unreleased broadcast versions of 57 different songs, some in abbreviated form as part of the popular "something old, new, borrowed, and blue" medleys. Besides the vocalists Ray Eberle, Marion Hutton, and The Modernaires, featured soloists included Clyde Hurley and Johnny Best, trumpets; Ernie Caceres, alto saxophone; "Tex" Beneke, tenor sax; "Chummy" MacGregor, piano; and "Moe" Purtill, drums.
Making the original set even better, two more medleys and ten full-length songs or instrumentals (including several of Miller's biggest hits, such as Perfidia, Chattanooga Choo Choo, and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree) have now been added, along with a listing of the complete personnel of the Glenn Miller Orchestra for all of these performances.
The performances, which were initially released more than 50 years ago, and here are re-titled "75 Glenn Miller Masterpieces," remain a significant document of Miller's music.
